Literary Fiction
Character, language, and the interior life.
Literary fiction is the shelf where the way a book is written counts as much as what happens in it, and readers are usually willing to stay with a person who is thinking, remembering, or quietly making a mess of things. The plot can be small. A marriage under strain, a return to a town, a decision that looks minor from the outside and isn't from the inside, is often enough, so long as the book is honest about how people actually behave when nobody is watching.
That doesn't mean the story can drift. A literary novel still needs a reason to keep turning the page, even if that reason is a question about a character rather than a chase. The language should be precise rather than decorated, and the ending doesn't have to be tidy, but it does have to feel as if the book has arrived somewhere. If you are writing one, trust the reader with ambiguity, and don't explain the feeling in the last chapter just because you are nervous they missed it.
The kinds of book inside it
Psychological
The interest is in how a mind works under pressure, often with a gap between what the person tells themselves and what the reader can see.
Domestic
The drama sits in a household, and the stakes are usually love, money, children, or the story a family has agreed to tell about itself.
Campus
Universities give you closed rooms, ambition, and people who are clever enough to talk themselves into trouble.
Experimental
The form is part of the point, whether that means a broken timeline, an unusual narrator, or a structure the reader has to learn as they go.
Social novel
A wider argument runs under the personal story, about class, work, race, or the way a city treats the people who live in it.
Quiet realism
Very little is announced. The book trusts small changes in a day, and the reader is meant to feel the shift without being told it happened.
When you want a first sketch, Storywell can draft a story summary in this vein. You are still the one who writes the book. Compose an idea.
