Coming of Age

The self assembling under pressure.

A coming-of-age novel follows someone while they are becoming a person they will have to live with. It is not only a book about teenagers. Plenty of people do their real growing up later, when a marriage ends or a parent dies or a first proper freedom arrives and turns out to be more work than it looked. The form needs a before and an after, even if the change is quiet.

Nostalgia is a risk. The past in these books is easy to soften until nothing in it can cut. Keep the boredom, the cruelty, the embarrassment, and the occasional joy that doesn't know it is important yet. The narrator, if they are looking back, can be wiser than they were, but they shouldn't tidy the younger self into a lesson. Readers recognise the feeling of only understanding an event once it is too late to live it differently.

The kinds of book inside it

  • Bildungsroman

The education of a whole character, over enough time that we see them being made, not just having a revelation in one weekend.

  • One summer

A single season does the work of years, so the days need to be full, and the ending of the summer has to mean something.

  • School years

School is the world, with its own justice, and leaving it, or surviving it, is the change the book is built around.

When you want a first sketch, Storywell can draft a story summary in this vein. You are still the one who writes the book. Compose an idea.
